The Liverpool Overhead Railway, 1893-1956. Copyright Online Video 1990. Running time approximately 36 minutes. The Liverpool Overhead Railway was not only unique, it was also a pioneer. It was the first elevated railway in the world to operate electric trains. It was the very first complete elevated line in Great Britain and the first to install automatic signalling and subsequently coloured light signals. As famous as the City's waterfront, the Liverbirds and the two football clubs, the railway was known locally as 'The Overhead.'
