Played by: MadMatty Duke Nukem 3D conversion to the Sega Saturn by Lobotomy Software utilizing the Slavedriver game engine. Published by Deep Water / Sega in 1997. “Kick Some Serious Butt! Aliens have invaded L.A. and taken it hostage. Run, Swim, Jump and Fly in full 3D freedom as you blast assault troopers, enforcers and octabrains to rescue the City of Angels. Then, discover the truth behind the alien invasion and boot those nasties outta the solar system.“ The Saturn version of the Duke 3D is based on the original PC release with 3 episodes as apposed to the Atomic edition with four episodes which the PS1 version is based on. A few levels are missing with a few of the larger levels split into two smaller ones with a total of 30 levels overall. There are 2 secret levels with the second replaced with a Saturn exclusive level. Also note that the Saturn game isn't split up into episodes but just one continuous run of levels like the N64 version. With the Saturn game being built on the Slavedriver engine, the game looks a little different with the addition of dynamic lighting effects and cd audio soundtracks. Most notably different is that levels contain no moving parts so nothing spins or bobs up and down. the geometry of the levels can look strange too and many outside areas are massively shrunk down compared to the original. Some levels feel a little 'phoned in' with missing texture work and empty secret areas. Episode 3 (last 10 levels) has lobotomy logo stickers plastered around the levels. This Longplay shows a complete run through the game while showing 99% secret areas found. One escapes me in 'L22 - Bank Roll' The amount and placement of secrets differ from the PC original making it a challenge to not only to find them, but hoping that the game acknowledges it as a secret area. I tried to tweak the controls to make it play better than my Quake playthrough, but it's still doesn't feel right even though I can circle strafe now. Annoyingly though, you have to pause the game to access the inventory which is fine while playing but jarring when watching. At the end of the video, I show Death Tank Zwei which can be unlocked by destroying every urinal in the game or with a Powerslave or Quake save game file which I just happen to have handy. Its reminiscent of the pd games we used to have on Pc/Amiga back in the day and this one is more than a little inspired by worms.
