The US Carbine, Caliber .30, M1, or M1 Carbine, was adopted by the US in 1942 as a more effective replacement for the M1911A1 pistol for support troops. Chambered in the new .30 carbine cartridge, it had a 15 round, detachable magazine. Its small size, light weight, and fire power were well regarded by the troops issued it. The M1 and subsequent M2, and M3 variants saw service with the US in to Vietnam.
