This year’s Sundance hit “CODA” (now available to stream on Apple TV ) is more than a masterstroke in filmmaking from writer-director Sian Heder. It’s also a case study in the impact that storytelling can have when it’s steered by the minority groups it’s meant to represent. We’ve never seen a film centered on a deaf family as movingly and authentically as we do in “CODA.” That’s largely thanks to its talented cast, led by newcomer Emilia Jones as the hearing daughter of Oscar winner Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur’s Jackie and Frank Rossi, the latter pair of whom are deaf in real life. For Kotsur, a longtime theater actor, it’s been a particularly breakout year. Already the recipient of a Gotham Award win for supporting actor and nominations for the supporting actor title at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, Golden Globes, and more, he and reunited with Apple for Backstage to film three of his favorite monologues from film and theater entirely in American Sign Language.
