The meeting between Ahmad Jamal and Shahin Novrasli was far from the trope of a master and his apprentice. The illustrious American took the Azerbaijani virtuoso under his wing (even going so far as to produce him) because he recognized the makings of a highly original pianist, who stands clearly above the fray. To celebrate the release of their respective albums on the Jazz Village record label - “Ballades” for Jamal and “From Baku to New York City” for Novrasli – Qobuz met the two jazzmen, who are 47 years apart in age, to discuss their encounter as well as the relationship they have with their instrument.
