There are lots of cross-border friendships and in some sense, it is these friendships that build understanding between people from different countries and make the world a better place. For more about these encounters between Chinese and people from other country, please check out the series “Encounters in China“ from the playlist Renowned neuroscientist Colin Blakemore (UK) was one of the first western scientists to work in China after reform and opening up. In the laboratory in Beijing he met Pu Mingliang (Beijing), a young technician who was excited to meet a foreign scientist. They were investigating potential treatments for a disorder called amblyopia, also known as lazy eye. After working closely together in the lab Colin could tell Mingliang was capable of becoming an important neurologist. Their work in Beijing was published under both of their names.
