In 1915 Anna Pavlova went to Hollywood to star in the movie “The Dumb [Mute] Girl of Portici” that was filmed at Universal Pictures studio by first American female director Lois Weber. Story about Fenella, a poor and mute Italian girl, who falls in love with a Spanish nobleman, and their affair triggers a revolution and national catastrophe, was based on 1828 opera “La muette de Portici“ by Daniel Auber. The opera was the most unusual because the main character, mute by definition, was performed by ballerina.
