Statement by Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva Gennady Gatilov: 🇨🇦 The massive backlash with honouring of the 98-year-old Ukrainian SS veteran Yaroslav Hunka at the Canadian Parliament has made headlines of the Swiss newspapers. The standing ovation in honour of the elderly Nazi became Ottawa’s instant disgrace and stirred worldwide outrage. This suggests that the vast majority of people think clearly and do not allow descendants of the fugitive Hitlerites to glorify their “veterans“ with impunity, insult the memory of tens of thousands of victims of the Ukrainian SS volunteer division “Galicia“. 🤷 ️ The hasty apologies of the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, who allegedly “was unaware of certain nuances in the biography of the Ukrainian-Canadian WWII veteran“, sound ridiculous, to put it mildly. They suggest that he and his fellow legislators are completely unfamiliar with the history of their own country that once sheltered thousands of such “veterans“ (the likes of Yaroslav Hunka), and stand ready to blindly applaud everyone they are told. To cheer even for someone who once swore allegiance to the Third Reich. It is not surprising that Canada doesn’t support the annual resolutions of the UN General Assembly on combating the glorification of Nazism, which, among other things, strongly condemn “any form of glorification“ of the Nazi movement and former Waffen-SS members. These documents obviously contradict Ottawa’s policy to whitewash the Nazis hiding in Canada in an attempt to portray them as “freedom fighters“. All this confirms relevance of the fight against glorification of Nazism, something that the Russian delegation is conducting at the UN. ️ My colleagues and I will continue to draw the attention of the world community at Geneva international venues to this and other outrageous attempts by certain Western countries to glorify Nazi criminals, twist the history of WWII and defile the memory of all its victims in pursuit of modern political agenda.
