Only too often to find out that the commodity in question is loaded with synthetic additives. Luckily, in a world like that we have the universally applauded and commended Danish singer and guitarist Thorbjørn Risager and his merry men in the band The Black Tornado. Their particular take on blues and bluesrock is organic, genuine and soulful. With authenticity comparable to the late John Lee Hooker’s footstomping and to legends like John Hiatt and Tony Joe White. If ever there were exponents for the sound of the American heartland, you know. Just listen to Thorbjørn and the boys’ new single ”Watch The Sun Go Down” – a tasty morsel and precursor for the band’s 13th. album, “Navigation Blues” - out on the stellar label Provogue/Mascot Label Group in September 30th. ”Watch The Sun Go Down” is a song bathing in the neon lights of Memphis’ legendary blues epicenter Beale Street with an added whiff of stale bourbon whiskey and those dreams you’re still allowed to dream normally only found on the streets of New Orleans. Or to put it like a reviewer did after listening to Thorbjørn’s 2021 twenty years anniversary ”Best Of “ album: ”How the hell does a native of Denmark succeed in constantly delivering like he just got off the bar stool and staggered on stage in a sketchy New Orleans neighbourhood?” The answer is still blowing in the humid wind of the American south. Remove the questionmark though and the statement is wholly valid. ”Watch The Sun Go Down” bears testament to the fact that Thorbjørn has that elusive ”extra” compared to a lot of other blues preachers. This song about how the simple joys and necessities can keep even the most threatening adversities at bay is simply stellar songwriting in a genre often preoccupied with style alone. The quality on show here won’t surprise those already familiar with Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado. However, those who are not will get a both pleasant and unexpected surprise in a battered world where pleasant surprises are few and far between.
