Full title reads: “Whitehaven. Again 'King Coal' takes Toll. 28 miners lose their lives in terrible explosion two miles under sea from the shaft of the Haig Pit.“ Whitehaven, Cumbria. Shots of miners gathered outside colliery building. Members of the Salvation Army and St. John's Ambulance are also there. A body is carried along on a stretcher by miners. Two policemen salute as the corpse passes. Another body is carried into a building. (The voiceover explains that the disaster in coal mine took place in a seam cut out under the sea. As well as an explosion there was a problem with gas.) This material is from 1930s Extras Reel 2 - keep separately from original newsreels. Version also on tape PM0757 - looks the same.
