Without abandoning the quirky mix of gorgeous, acoustic guitar-driven pop tunes and heart-rending, misery-driven lyrics with which they're most closely associated, The Sundays' STATIC & SILENCE finds the band further fleshing out their lush, dreamy mope-scapes. With a darker, slower approach more akin to Country than to Britpop, Harriet Wheeler's angelic voice and melancholic lyrics are given a more intimate treatment than on previous albums. Guitarist David Gavurin builds each song with intimate acoustic guitars, breezy voicings, and spacious arrangements, punctuating them with chiming, cascading layers of arpeggiated electric guitar. Inspired instrumental touches abound; on “When I'm Thinking About You,“ Gavurin's baroque-sounding fingerpicking is accented with a brass section and bird calls. “Cry“ mixes plaintive rhythm guitar and swirling strings, while “Another Flavour“ is a distant, tremolo-filled rocker about the ephemeral nature of fashion.
