Paul McCartney felt bad for Mercury and wrote “Once Upon a Long Ago“ with Mercury in his mind. Mercury also got busy with other work, both solo and with Queen, with whom he was preparing a new album to be recorded. He was increasingly bothered by his health. As a result, he no longer had time to work with Paul McCartney, so an understanding but disappointed McCartney continued the project and recorded the song alone.
