The Old Man (Kazakh: Шал, translit. Shal) is a 2012 Kazakhstani drama film written and directed by Ermek Tursunov. The film was selected as the Kazakhstani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards,[1] but it was not nominated. The film is set in the countryside in modern Kazakhstan . The main character , the old man , about to drive away the sheep in the pasture , lost in the desert . In an attempt to find the right way , he repeatedly runs into a pack of wolves . Meanwhile, his grandson, goes in search of his grandfather with the help of neighbors and rescue services . «Шал» (каз. Шал, рус. Старик) — фильм казахстанского режиссёра Ермека Турсунова, снятый по мотивам повести Эрнеста Хемингуэя «Старик и море». Премьера картины состоялась 11 октября 2012 года[2]. Фильм является второй частью трилогии, задуманной режиссёром. Первым фильмом стал фильм «Невестка»[3]. В сентябре 2013 года Казахстан выдвинул фильм «Шал» на соискание премии «Оскар» в номинации «Лучший фильм на иностранно
