Titles read: “HEADLINES FROM THE AMERICAN PRESS ILLUSTRATED“. United States of America. Various shots show shipbuilder Henry Kaiser with his wife at the launching of one of his new ships - the 'John Fitch' - built in his dockyard in just 18 days. Mrs Kaiser tries to smash the bottle on the side of the ship but misses. As the ship starts to move down the slipway a man grabs the bottle and flings it at the vessel - this time it works! The keel of a new ship is put into position as the John Fitch hits the water. Various shots of the United States Battleship Iowa being launched at another US shipyard. We then see over 400 young American women taking a soldier's oath (natural sound) as they become third officers of the WAACs (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps). M/S of a WAAC sitting in a chair on a platform - could be WAAC Director Oveta C Hobby. The women line up to receive their commissions from a male officer on the platform.
