Dr Hook is a band, and not the name of of the lead singer. The most visible member is Ray Sawyer, with the famous eye patch he started wearing after losing an eye from a serious car accident in 1967, but he is not the lead singer. The lead singer is actually the bassist, Dennis Locorriere. The band name “Dr Hook & The Medicine Show“ actually was a sly reference to drugs and to Ray Sawyer compared to the character of Captain Hook, who lost a hand and not an eye. Working the Jersey shores for a few years, the band gained a following, eventually garnering a movie soundtrack appearance courtesy of Shel Silverstein. That under their belt, they were signed to CBS Records and released their first LP “Doctor Hook“. “Sylvia's Mother“ a bittersweet weeper sold well and peaked at #5 in 1972.
