Early European visitors to Easter Island recorded the local oral traditions about the original settlers. According to legend, it was the ancient Polynesian chief Hotu Matu'a who first brought his tribe to Easter Island many moons ago. No-one seems to know exactly how long ago that was though, with some records showing 800 years and others 1,700 years.
