Making a point from a large spall or large biface is a specialized skill and requires a different mindset compared to making smaller points. The transition from starting “big“ and then trying to finish “small“ is not easy. It's best to put aside large bifaces when they get too small, and make smaller points another day. Many new knappers try to obtain the largest spalls possible so that they can have “plenty of room to make a point“. This is not a good strategy. It is better to stay within a certain size range and focus on that particular size. It's hard for me to explain the differences between large and small biface knapping. The main thing to keep in mind that many instructors will teach knapping from the perspective of large point manufacture, but this is only a small portion of the art of knapping and a difficult place for beginners to start.
