A major fire at a high-rise apartment in Almaty, Kazakhstan prompted a panicked rescue effort as people were forced to jump from the upper floors. In a dramatic scene, a young child was thrown to safety out of a sixth-story window, and was caught in an extended sheet by rescuers on the ground. Moments later, the adult followed, although, unfortunately, with a somewhat heavier landing. Firefighting crews could also be seen pulling people out of windows on ladders as they battled against the billowing smoke. According to the Department of Emergency Situations, the fire was caused by an electrical short in an elevator shaft. In total, 50 firefighters and 14 fire trucks were able to successfully rescue over 250 people, 40 of which either climbed down ladders or jumped.
