The global space race is heating up with countries like the U.S. and China spearheading fresh space initiatives. South Korea is also sparing no efforts to become a major space powerhouse doubling its space budget and enhancing public-private partnerships in the new space era. For a comprehensive examination of the latest developments in space news, we’re joined by Shin Dong-hyuk, Assistant Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at KAIST. We’re also delighted to have Wendy Whitman Cobb, Professor of Strategy and Security Studies at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies. (COBB) Q1. Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched its powerful Starship for the third time into space earlier this month. Before we get into the details of the latest launch, first give us an introduction to the massive rocket. (SHIN) Q2. The Starship rocket reached new heights in its monumental third test flight but was lost on reentry. What’s your assessment of the third launch? What’s expected from the next launch? (COBB) Q3. The race to the moon is intensifying, with a huge wave of attention drawn to which billionaire will get there first– Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. What are your expectations? (SHIN) Q4. Private space companies' lunar exploration projects are in full swing across the globe. Tell us a little bit about the significance of the private sector’s active participation in the new space era. (COBB) Q5. China, meanwhile, has launched its Queqiao-2 relay satellite to support the country’s upcoming lunar far side and south polar missions. Tell us more about this, and also bring us up to date on China’s lunar exploration. (SHIN) Q6. Hanwha Aerospace, often referred to as the Korean version of SpaceX, has been selected to lead Korea’s next-generation space launch vehicle project. along with the state-run Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Could you give us the details of the project, and what are your prospects for the public-private collaboration? (SHIN) Q7. The Yoon administration plans to inject 1.5 trillion won during President Yoon’s term, and induce 100 trillion-won investment by 2045 to turn South Korea into a major space powerhouse. Could you elaborate on the efforts being made by the government to boost Korea’s space industry, and how do you assess them? (COBB) Q8. The global race to the moon is heating up.
