Process post! I was given the task to animate a determined Moana, who is absolutely terrible at sailing. How can I show that she’s terrible at sailing? I thought it would be fun to show her accidentally tying her hand to the rudder, dropping the rudder, losing control of the mainsail, etc. When starting the shot, I try and figure out the main actions and acting beats with thumbnail sketches. Some questions I ask myself all throughout my process: What is the character thinking/feeling during the shot? How do their emotions/attitudes shift throughout the shot? How can I physicalize the ideas through movement and posing? As you can see in my video reference, I’m a terrible actor, but the footage helps me figure out how some of the body mechanics might work. The rope was really challenging to animate! After animating a rough pass at it (the colored rope in the playblast) I worked back and forth with a super talented tech anim artist, Jason Robinson, as he worked on simulation for the rope. That rope was a doozy haha! ---- Thank you for watching and Subscribing!
