It covers 8,665 square kilometres and has a population of around 245000. Its capital and largest city is Sukhumi. Abkhazia is diverse geographically with lowlands stretching to the extremely mountainous north. The Greater Caucasus Mountain Range runs along the region's northern border, with its spurs – the Gagra, Bzyb and Kodori ranges – dividing the area into a number of deep, well-watered valleys. The highest peaks of Abkhazia are in the northeast and east and several exceed 4000 metres above sea level. Abkhazia's landscape ranges from coastal forests and citrus plantations to permanent snows and glaciers in the north of the region. Since the 19th century, systematic improvement of the terrain has been carried out in Abkhazia - swamps with malarial mosquitoes were drained, and exotic plants from all over the world, such as eucalyptus and palm trees, were brought and planted. Although Abkhazia's complex topographic setting has spared most of the territory from significant human development, its cultivated fertile lands produce tea, tobacco, wine and fruits, a mainstay of the local agricultural sector. Abkhazia was part of the Soviet Union from 1921 to 1991. In 1931, Joseph Stalin made it an autonomous republic (Abkhaz ASSR) within the Georgian SSR. The region was one of the most popular resorts in the USSR due to its subtropical climate, sea and mountains. In the 30s of the 20th century, coal mining began in the east of Abkhazia and a large coal-fired power plant was built in the city of Tkvarcheli. The country also developed hydropower and light (tea) industry. As the Soviet Union began to disintegrate at the end of the 1980s, ethnic tensions grew between the Abkhaz and Georgians over Georgia's moves towards independence. Many Abkhaz opposed this, fearing that an independent Georgia would lead to the elimination of their autonomy, and argued instead for the establishment of Abkhazia as a separate Soviet republic in its own right. Georgia declared independence from the USSR on April 9, 1991. In its turn on 23 July 1992 Abkhazia declared effective independence from Georgia. It culminated in the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia, which resulted in Georgia's loss of control over most of Abkhazia. During the war, numerous crimes against humanity were reported on both sides. Before the 1992, Georgians made up 45.7% of Abkhazia's population, while 17.8% was Abkhaz, 14.6% - Armenian and 14.3% - Russian. Most of the Georgian population had to leave Abkhazia forcibly or voluntarily. As a result, the population of Abkhazia fell from 525000 in 1989 to 216000 in 2003. As well as other states of the former Soviet Union, in the 90-s Abkhazia experienced a catastrophic industrial decline, exacerbated by war, the breakdown of economic ties and population decline. Almost all old Soviet industrial facilities were abandoned. Nowadays Abkhazia has been recognised as an independent state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria; however, the Georgian government and nearly all United Nations member states consider Abkhazia sovereign territory of Georgia.
