The slow progress of Ukraine’s counteroffensive is in part due to the hurdles laid down by the Russian army in southern and eastern Ukraine. Anticipating the counteroffensive, Russian forces had begun preparing the ground along Ukraine’s likeliest axes of advance. Russian workers excavated trenches, piled up earthen berms and laid out concrete obstacles for tanks. However, Ukraine had prepared a large force of special engineering vehicles to breach enemy defences.
