The residential heartland of Mariupol once lay in rubble, having seen some of the most intense urban fighting of the conflict. Now, homes are rebuilt anew, as a massive residential area begins construction. The new area will contain schools, kindergartens, and 2,500 new homes, all in a 100,000 square meter complex. Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, and Russian Deputy Minister of Defense, Timur Ivanov, visited the construction site on Friday, and took a tour of the first completed apartment. The first six houses are due to be completed by September, with a further six by October. ‘I hope they will be happy owners’, said Ivanov. In addition to the residential infrastructure, a multifunctional medical center, a new water pipeline and three concrete factories are to be built as part of the Mariupol restoration effort, conducted with aid from Moscow, St Petersburg and Tula.
