What’s going on in Ecuador? 🧵 The videos below shows the moment when 59 year-old Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate for President of Ecuador & a member of the country's national assembly, was assassinated as he left a campaign event in Quito on Wednesday. He was officially pronounced dead later after succumbing to injuries. Although politically on the right, he did denounce the high rate of crimes and cartels currently in Ecuador. Western media has incorrectly reported he was leading the polls but he was actually polling at 11/12%. The leading candidate is leftist Luisa Gonzalez who has been polling at 39.4 % & has since unequivocally condemned the assassination saying what happened goes beyond politics and those guilty should be brought to justice. She also said this is the second assassination of a candidate and others in her party have also been killed. A criminal cartel gang called Los Lobos (The Wolves) has claimed responsibility and said candidate Jan Topic is next. Ecuador’s President Lasso subsequently declared a 60 day state of emergency. But the overwhelming majority of people including the slain candidate’s sister blame the current Lasso government, with many believing the security forces are imbedded with the cartels. Villavicencio’s family was also not allowed to see his body. The story takes another twist as the murderer was arrested and died in police custody, with many confidently alleging he was killed to cut off any loose ends. Electoral council chief Diana Atamaint has said snap elections will go ahead without delay on August 20th following the murder of Fernando Villavicencio. Источник: Fiorella In Moscow
