M/S inside a cabin on board a ship as a passenger arrives and a steward helps him unpack; there are two sleeping berths and the passenger tests both of them with his hand. M/S in a lounge on the ship; the barman prepares to open the bar; some passengers, a couple with a baby, walk in and sit in comfy chairs as the man goes to the bar to order. Commentator tells us this is a ferry for the transportation of commercial vehicles, although it carries regular and business passengers too. M/S of the ferry in dock at Tilbury in Essex as a truck passes in the foreground carrying some large machinery. Commentator says “The ferry itself is based on a wartime design, adapted, without much difficulty, to the uses of peace“. As we see M/S of the doors opening in the bow of the ship, commentator mentions that the idea comes from a tank landing craft, specially built so that war vehicles could drive straight into the hold and disembark easily onto beaches and other places where cranes and docks were not available.
