I created this piece during Bali’s Blood Moon. A blood moon is a total lunar eclipse when the earth passes between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun’s rays - but with some sunlight refracted from the edges of at the earth’s atmosphere indirectly projected onto the moon. The refraction allows only the orange/red hues of the longer wavelengths to be seen, much like a sunset. Science, astrology and legend duke it out over the meaning of a blood moon. Many cultures portray the event as an omen. Apocalyptic myths, legends and prophesies around this phenomenon abound, from signifying the end of the world to conflict resolution. It occurs only twice a year. Astrologer Jasmin Alejandrez-Prasad sees it as a time of release and closure, a time of culmination, to let go of negative energy and beliefs and of bad habits, a time to avoid arguments for it’s a time of chaos. That’s because release can be chaotic, bringing grief. It’s also a time for introspection.
