Filkins lies on an ancient route from the high Cotswolds to the Thames, and beyond to the South Coast. Filkins was historically a hamlet in the ancient parish (and civil parish from 1866) of Broadwell. It became a separate civil parish in 1896. Filkins is the home of the Swinford Museum, one of the oldest small museums in Oxfordshire, housed in a 17th century cottage. It features local domestic, agricultural, trade and craft tools.
