Built by General Dynamics, and in commission since 1981, the 560 foot long, 18,000 tonne Ohio-class are the largest submarines ever operated by the U.S. Navy. And they also happen to be a supremely capable boat that has served the United States of America (and the free world) with distinction; by acting as a mobile, undetectable, undersea, intercontinental missile launch platform; and therefore deterring the aggressive instincts of America’s adversaries. Indeed there is arguably no more important asset in the United States military than an Ohio-class strategic missile submarine.
