Rare Footage of Iceberg A23a, the largest iceberg in the world. A23a is the world’s largest iceberg, and is now on the move. This iceberg is approximately 4,000 sq km, making it 3x the size of New York City. It originally broke off the Antarctic Coast in 1986, and has been stuck on the bottom of the Weddell Sea ever since. It is now moving in the Antarctic circumpolar current. When getting close to it, katabatic winds come off the ice plateau and the air and sea temperatures drop. Due to several factors, including the amount of cold fresh water coming from this massive block of ice sitting in the ocean, there is a localized upwelling of nutrient rich seawater. This causes an influx of wildlife–including a massive amount of whale feeding opportunistically around the ice island. Traveling in the Antarctic circumpolar current A23a is now heading towards the Southern Ocean. Thank you for watching! Please hit that like button and share :) Want to see more? Subscribe!
