After a quick turnaround, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Detroit Red Wings. Looking to bounce back from the previous game, the Penguins came to play. Reilly Smith started the scoring by tipping in a shot from Marcus Pettersson. Lucas Raymond responded for the Red Wings. Before the Period was over, the Penguins took the lead back. Sidney Crosby scored unassisted. That goal tied Crosby with Wayne Gretzky for the seventh-most goals with a single franchise in NHL history. Quickly after the Penguins got a second goal from Valtteri Puustinen. Tic tac toe passing from below the goal line, Smith passed to Puustinen in the slot. In one motion, Puustinen collected the pass and shot the puck into the back of the net. Penguins ended the period with a 3-1 lead. Michael Bunting continued the scoring in the 2nd period. Puustinen sent a shot on net and Bunting dove to tap in the rebound. Late in the 2nd, Christian Fischer scored for Detroit, but the Penguins answered right back.
