Here’s a strange mashup of B.J. Thomas’s “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” (written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David in 1969 for one of the best films of all time, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) with Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s “I’m Still Standing” (released in 1983 on the album Too Low for Zero). Tess had no voice – she’s had this weird cough doing the rounds – hence a rather bit part. The context is pretty self-explanatory in the UK, and it’s obviously a parody/satirical twist on (a) a happy-go-lucky tune given the election launch in the pouring rain, and (b) an anthem about survival in the face of adversity – given that many MPs are jumping off the proverbial ship that they sank. The General Election date was announced – to everyone’s surprise – by Rishi Sunak, with only a six-week lead in. That means 4th July will have significance, for once, on both sides of the pond… It will mark the retirement as MPs of a lot of characters that we have sung about in one form or another in recent years - including Matt Hancock, Sir Graham Brady, Kwasi Kwarteng, Theresa May, Dominic Raab, and lots more. And if you're looking forward to this vein of satire finally running dry, then you can look beyond it and support our original (non-political songs) coming this summer below, including one just before the election :) You can read a bit about it if you’re interested here, to get a couple of the references: ___________________________ Support us here: - Kickstarter for our summer 2024 campaign: - PayPal to leave us a tip jar: - Patreon for ongoing support & bonuses: Find our other channels here: Follow us here: - - - - - @marshfamilysongs - ___________________________ LYRICS: Raindrops were fallin' on his head I just don’t get why he snubbed The media suite instead? It wasn’t just a bit! Those raindrops were pourin’ as he read, Metaphoring But he just kept bangin’ on about his plan And he said there’s gonna be A snap election Pleading for his job You’d think we were scorin’ far ahead In the polling But there's one thing I know Whoever’s sent to meet me Will defeat me! Cos all we’ve done is feather nests And grift discreetly [Switch to “I’m Still Standing”] You could never know what it's like A thumping great majority sacrificed And there’s a Cabinet position I got to do Ended up like a wrecking ball and causing vast abuse Now, I’m not thinking I can ever win So fare thee well, I’m not comin’ back again! I got a second job with amazing pay I’m pretty greedy though I seem upstanding I’ll just hide away Don't you know I’m not standin' – better to retire or quit Reckon they’ll be few survivors! I don’t give a diddly-shit. I’m not standin' – can’t be arsed this time Leavin’ all the faeces in a pile for someone else to find I’m not standin' (Nah, nah, nah) I’m not standin' (Nah, nah, nah) Once, I maybe coulda hoped to win The Party’s now corroded to a loony bin The mess we’ve made – they’re gonna cut us down And if our boss was fit for purpose, he wouldn’t be drowning now You know: I'm not standin' – face the music? God forbid! Gonna find some other things to do with several million quid I’m not standin’ in this firing line Gonna find a Freeport or some fields of wheat to spend my time I’m not standin' (Nah, nah, nah) I’m not standin' (Nah, nah, nah) I’m not standin' (Nah, nah, nah) I’m not standin' (Nah, nah, nah) ___________________________ Special thanks as ever reserved for our magnificent Howlers (the top category of supporters on Patreon): Alyssa Sangeeta Jacobson Memorial Fund Sandra Vernooy Dan Mccolm Patricia Saucier Ronald Slye Todd Jim the Magician Douglas Lind David Ryan Simon Haslam Dave Lee Lew Mike Smith Andy Riches Cliff Hope Carol Leff Derrick Brown Grandad David Patrao Geeta & Karen Clarence Smith Gary Carpenter
