FIRST CHIPS - Volume One (1972 US Psych Folk Blues) First Chips is actually Vyto Beleska backed by various musicians which were probably the different bands he was in or other musician copies pressed, distributed personally by Beleska. Only comparable to A-Austr in terms of audacity and forward-thinkingness, this is, for me, the pinnacle of the US private press scene, a whirlpool of an album that sucks you in unexpected and never lets breathe until the very last note. Early brainchild of the songwriter extraordinaire Vyto B (who later did a more, um, normal, but no less brilliant and whacked out song cycle on his “Trincentennial 2076“ album), First Chips were all around the map from the get-go - there is proto-punk, folk, druggy psychedelia and even radical freeform noise outbursts on “Volume One“, that could easily pass for a decent Nihilist Spasm Band tune.
