Ewan McGregor has unveiled what happened to Renton in the twenty years between the 1996 hit film and it’s long awaited sequel. He revealed today that his character had fled to Amsterdam with the £16,000 drug deal profits he stole at the end of the 1996 hit film. The former heroin addict has become a fitness fanatic after ditching drugs but returns to Edinburgh a “broken man” at the start of the new movie to seek solace from his old associates. In an interview, McGregor, 45, said: “The first time we see Renton in this film he is in Amsterdam. “He went to Holland with the cash and he’s lived there ever since, he’s never, ever been home.” “Renton replaced his drug addiction with endorphin addiction. He’s become the runner. “So he comes back with a lot of baggage and a lot of guilt. He’s so broken when he comes back, he’s really in a state. “That’s why he’s back because these are the only people that really know him or that he knows. “He’s not what the audience will expect Renton to be. He chose life.”
