Considered the precursor of many later avant-garde artistic fields and as the most eccentric composer of the fin de siècle era. His provocative compositions in the spirit of dark, modernist decadence equally fascinated his contemporaries, which outraged public opinion. Characteristic for Erik Sati's work are musical terms and composition names invented by himself (Gnossiennes), words that had no connection with music (Ogives, or “ostrołuki“) or referring to ancient Greece (Gymnopédies). Satie's ideal was music that could serve as a backdrop to everyday life, being in a way an additional home furniture, i.e. one that could affect a person's mood, but not absorb him enough to distract him from other activities. Such music was described by the artist himself with the slogan musique d'ameublement, and is now considered a prototype of a musician.
