Whenever Miguel Cotto fought there was a 100 percent guarantee that win or lose you were in for a fantastic bout. And that’s because the Puerto Rican champion was a unique combination of styles, a hybrid boxer that took the most technical and elegant elements of sport and paired them with the most primal and aggressive. That’s rare, and a big reason that he was able to do this was that he was a natural southpaw, being left handed, however he chose to fight in an orthodox stance with his left side forward. Meaning that he enjoyed a whole lot of extra power in his lead hand. BOOK SALES: Footwork, Defense & Counters, Power Generation & Style Building Bundle Half Off! Mortal Weapons Series Discord (Server TMMA): And I would argue this aided him tremendously in getting away with a pretty rare and unusual combination of styles. We’ve all likely heard of boxer punchers, boxers who have a great jab and footwork but rather than stay outside and outpoint their opponent the whole match they use their boxing to set up harder punches. Thomas Hearns is a prime example. He started out as a fleet footed out-boxer, but as he put on more and more muscle he found out that his boxing could set up insanely powerful punches, like his chopping right. But I would classify Cotto as a boxer swarmer. Swarmers overwhelm their opponent’s with endless amounts of volume. They can use well crafted combinations so that one punch sets up the next punch. Or they can say screw all that and just beat on their opponent’s guard like a drum, striking with an unending crescendo of pure violence rivaling Danny Carey.
