The relationship between the Russian Empire and the U.S. went through some interesting shifts from the American Revolution to World War I. At first, Russia stayed neutral during the Revolution and even backed the U.S. during the War of 1812. Things were pretty friendly in the mid-1800s, especially when Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. in 1867. But as the U.S. became more powerful, tensions started to build, although both countries were still keen on keeping British influence in check.
