Visualisation of mercury vapour Traces of mercury vapour are detected on a fluorescent screen (TLC plate, F254) by using a UV light source with λ=254 nm. A small amount of mercury was placed in a petri dish on a heating plate in front of a fluorescent screen illuminated by a short wave UV light source (mercury-vapour lamp), and heated to 50 °C.
