This song tells the story of the fight between Fingolfin (third High King of the Noldor) and Melkor (Morgoth, “The Dark Enemy“) in front of his dark fortress Angband, after the elves were defeated and scattered in the Dagor Bragollach (“Battle of Sudden Flame“) by Melkor’s force led by the balrogs and the dragon Glaurung.
