Storm Ciaran live updates: nearly 150,000 homes left without power as schools remain closed and rain moves northward A rare triple whammy of cyclones has caused an exceptionally heavy downpour that claimed 17 lives and displaced 50,000 people in northern Italy last month. The governor of Tuscany declares a state of emergency . At least three people were killed in severe flooding that hit central Tuscany on Thursday night as storm Chiaran swept across the country with torrential rain and high winds. All three flood victims were elderly, local newspaper La Nazione reported : two died in Montemurlo, near Prato, while another died in Rosignano, near Livorno. Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani declared a state of emergency in the region in a social media post due to the floods, which he blamed on climate change. Around 150,000 homes were left without power after Storm Ciaran caused severe weather with widespread flooding and damage across the UK and Europe. Hundreds of schools and several airports have been forced to close as more than 80 flood warnings remain in force. The UK is reeling from the aftermath of the devastating storm Ciaran, which recorded wind gusts of more than 100mph in Jersey, with strong winds and rain forecast for parts of the country today. Several people in Jersey were evacuated to hotels on Wednesday night, with residents saying they were hit by huge hail “bigger than a golf ball“. Urging people to stay at home and on upper floors, Jani called the situation “really very serious“ and said “every energy, every resource“ of the region was being used to fight the floods. Authorities used rubber boats to evacuate people from homes in the Ceano, Carrata and Campi Bisenzio neighborhoods, Giani said, adding that he had requested helicopters for those needing urgent transportation to hospital.
