The general argument made by the pro gun people in the united states is that an armed population prevents a tyrannical government from ruling over the people. I guess this logic to a certain extent makes sense, after all a tyrant would not want a serf or a slave to be armed would they? However, sometimes, the pro gun Americans take this idea and then begin making comments ABOUT other countries and societies which they do not really fully understand. For example, Americans would often say that in China, Mao Zedong after coming to power, took all the guns. As a result, millions of Chinese people died. The historic context of this argument is just false. 1. Most Chinese died from starvation and malnutrition. Having guns do not make agriculture, food, and infrastructure magically appear. If so, Somalia would be the most well fed country on earth. 2. Mao never took the guns. This footage which you are watching now was taken in 1958, during the height of the Great Famine. You can see that these Chinese civilians are all armed. Yet, if Mao Zedong was as tyrannical as Americans think they are, why wasn't the communist government overthrown?
