On Friday afternoon, two strong earthquakes occurred off the coast of the Indonesian island of Java. The epicenter was at sea. There was no threat of a tsunami. The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.9, occurred at 11:22 local time, 37 km west of Bawean Island. The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.5, occurred at 15:52 local time, 35 km west of Bawean Island. At least 110 aftershocks were later recorded. The tremors were strongly felt in East Java, its capital Surabaya, as well as in cities in neighboring provinces.
