In part 1 (of 6) of my Whittling the Travelling Gnome Tutorial, I demonstrate how I rough out the shape of the hat. This technique can be applied to establishing a hat for a wide variety of carvings. Gnome is carved from 1x1x3 inch basswood. For more pictures of the final product see
