One of the females of Proteus anguinus has started laying eggs in the aquarium of the Slovenia's Postojna Cave in the open, on 10 August 2013, during the peak of the tourist season. For the first time on record we have witnessed such exceptional thing happening: eggs of the proteus, the most complex and mysterious being of the underground world, being laid at a show cave. This is a true miracle of nature and for us also proof that the cave and the life inside of it are being taken care in the best possible way. Postojna Cave System in Slovenia is known for the highest cave biodiversity in the world with 150 species of subterranean cave dwelling animals. Owing to its early discoveries of cave animals, Postojna is regarded as the cradle of the scientific discipline of speleobiology, which sets it apart as an undisputed world centre. Proteus (also known as the olm) is a pale and highly unusal creature. It can grow up to 30 centimeters in length, it is completely blind and can live up to incredible 100 years.
