Jesse Cook | Breathing Below Surface | Spanish Guitar Instrumental Acoustic I wrote “Breathing Below Surface“ in 1997. The song first appeared on the album “Vertigo“ which came out the next Spring. Initially, like this version, I played all the instruments myself, but later invited Mario Melo to play percussion on the track. Yes, that “Mario Takes a Walk“ fame. Mario arrived in the studio and created that beautiful tapestry of Brazilian drums you hear on the original recording. For this new version, with covid and social distancing, I had to play all the percussion myself, which I secretly loved doing. On this one, I decided to go full Olodum, one of my favourite all-time rhythms from Brazil.
