Is traditional Karate just a form of ancient Kung-Fu? Follow Jesse Enkamp (The Karate Nerd) to learn the lost history of Karate - from China to Okinawa and ultimately Tokyo Olympics in Japan. The original name for Karate was “Tode“ (唐手) which doesn’t mean Empty Hand (空手) but literally translates to “Chinese Hand“. That’s what all the Okinawan masters called it. In this episode Jesse discovers Ming He Neipai kata (Nipaipo, Ershiba) at a Whooping Crane Kung Fu demonstration, and then learns kata Babulien (Papuren, . Happoren) at the famous Crane Temple in Fuzhou from Master Yu Dan Xiu. An interview with Hanshi Patrick McCarthy (IRKRS, Koryu Uchinadi) confirms this is what’s described in Bubishi - The Bible of Karate. Next stop is Yong Chun village - the birthplace of White Crane!
