Russia Launches its First Lunar Lander in 47 Years The Russian Moon mission Luna-25 craft blasted off from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the east of Moscow on Friday. The lander is due to touch down on the moon on August 23. Luna-25 aims to operate for a year on the moon's south pole. The scientists at NASA and other space agencies in recent years have detected traces of water ice in the shadowed craters of the lunar south pole. The Russian Luna 25 marks country's first moon mission since 1976. The spacecraft is racing against India's Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander that was launched on July 14 and is likely to land on the same day as Russian spacecraft.
