The Grammy Award-winning rapper allowed the young fan to perform his 2012 song “. City” off his debut album, good kid, city. The racial slur appears throughout the hook of the track, and without much thought, the fan proceeded to repeat it, which led Lamar to stop the music. “Aren’t I cool enough for you?”, asked the confused fan. “What’s up bro?”. The audience can be heard booing her as the rapper explained that she’s “got to bleep one single word.” The fan immediately apologized, replying: “Oh, I’m sorry. Did I do it? I’m so sorry…I’m used to singing it like you wrote it.” After promising to censor herself, she was allowed to stay onstage and rap the song for the second time. Lamar won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music in April for his fourth studio album DAMN., marking the first time a hip-hop artist was awarded the accolade. He is currently co-headlining the Championship Tour with labelmate SZA featuring the rest of TDE’s elite roster of artists.
