Shots of the German submarine base at Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast, filmed after World War One. Pan across harbour from one mole (harbour wall) to the other. Tugboats by pier at sunset. Wall next to beach leading to street. VS part of HMS Vindictive showing battered and torn red ensign. VS showing the abandoned base, including scuttled ship lying on side in water. Note from WPA cataloguer: This was the site of a daring raid by the British on April 22nd and 23rd, 1918. The British sunk obsolete cruisers in an attempt to block the mouth of the Bruges canal, while the HMS Vindictive created a distraction by putting ashore a landing party on the long curved mole protecting the harbour. She was nearly blown to bits in the process but returned to port heroically. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV.
