Visit Visit our website This silent film, “A Saddle Journey Through the Clouds“, was the first release in a series entitled “Travels With a Camera“ by Castle Films. (Incidentally, it's not clear if there were any other films released in this series.) The film likely dates to the early 1930s, and shows a mountaineering trip with pack horses, across Eastern California and the Sierras. This includes a stop at the Devils Postpile National Monument, located near Mammoth Mountain in Eastern California (2:36). The monument is an unusual rock formation of columnar basalt. At (3:30) a visit to Pilot Knob, one of a handful of volcanic plugs in the state of California. It is south of the Cargo Muchacho Mountains by approximately 7 miles and was used as a landmark for Colorado River riverboat captains during the 19th and 20th centuries. At (3:45) fishing in the river. At (4:12) Bishop's Pass, at 11,972 ft, in the southern Sierra Nevada. At (4:50) the members of the group are seen cooking a camp dinner. At (5:00) the Jackass Meadow, near the John Muir Wilderness, below Florence Lake on the San Joaquin River. At (5;14) Mammoth Peak is shown -- and Mt. Humphrey at 14,000 feet at (5:35). At (5:57) the horses ascend through the snowpack and at (6:12) there is a snowball fight. At (7:30), the Silver Pass and at (8:25) the Devil's Wash Basin, where the expedition lost one of their horses. At (8:51) the “Minarets“, and at (9:14) Shadow Lake, and (9:47) Mt. Ritter. At (10:26) the film ends with the group high atop the Sierras. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
