France Finally Leaves Niger. France finally bows to the demands of Niger’s junta in the former colony after a coup upended its strategy in Africa. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that French troops in Niger will withdraw by the end of the year. The announcement comes after a two-month standoff between France and the military regime in Niger following the July 26 coup. Amidst growing anti-French sentiment in the Sahel region, residents in the capital, Niamey, reacted to the news. There have been growing demonstrations by thousands of pro-coup Nigeriens demanding the exit of the French forces, which have been engaged in anti-terror campaigns in the Sahel region for years. In the wake of the coup, anti-French protests spread through Niamey, and the French embassy was attacked. The junta leaders said that Imperialist and neocolonialist forces are no longer welcome on our national territory. A new era of cooperation based on mutual respect and sovereignty is already underway. The announcement was a significant blow to France’s policy in Africa, with French troops having had to pull out of neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso in recent years after coups there.
